Guest Lecture on Uniform Civil Code and Muslim Law

 


Pune : Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) New Law College Pune, on the occasion of 80th Birth Anniversary of  Dr. Patangrao Kadam organized 'Dr. Patangrao Kadam Memorial Public Lecture Series – 2024' on 09th January, 2024,with lecture on Uniform Civil Code and Muslim Law.The guest speaker was Adv. Amar (Imtiyaz) Sahabuddin Mulla,(Senior Advisor, Home Ministry, Government of India, New Delhi).

This event was organized under the guidance of Dr. Ujwala Bendale,(Dean & In Charge Principal of  New Law College), Dr. Jyoti Dharm(Vice Principal )and Dr. Vidya Dhere(IQAC Coordinator) and coordinated by Dr. Rohit H Surawase, Assistant Professor.

Adv. Amar (Imtiyaz) Sahabuddin Mullaprimarily dealt with the historical background and evolution of Muslim Law and its sources. He elucidated the evolution of Sharia Law, its evolution and application in the medieval period in India and then he moved on to the British era where the common law system was adopted and common laws were made for the country. Along with the evolution he discussed various provisions of Muslim law such as Nikah, contract,types of divorce, maintenance provisions and gave his significant insights on the necessity as well as the importance of the Uniform Civil Code in that regard.Sir pointed out that UCC means uniformity in the application of laws, that all citizens should be governed by the same set of civil laws regardless of their background or beliefs. Describing the situation of women under personals laws, he stated that UCC can work towards eliminating such gender discrimination inherent in personal laws, thereby promoting gender justice, equality & dignity of women.Sir in his own style elaborated the importance of need of Uniform Civil Code for a current dynamics of Indian Society. Further Sir discussed points highlighting the importance of UCC & how it aims to provide equal status to all the citizens by ensuring the same set of civil laws, irrespective of their religion, caste, or community. 

This principle aligns with the Constitution’s mandate under Directive Principles of State Policy as reflected in Article 44, that the state shall strive to secure a UCC throughout the territory of India.Throughout the session law students, irrespective of their classes, curiously asked questions and have interacted with Adv. Amar (Imtiyaz) Sahabuddin Mulla on various aspects related to the topic.
